Keefe Gorman: The Meals On Wheels Senior Hunger

One of Meals On Wheels’ key goals is to alleviate senior hunger. A 2010 research report showed that approximately 8.3 million senior citizens in the United States are at risk of going hungry. Based on that report, Meals On Wheels is working to recruit 8.3 million volunteers to help end senior hunger by 2020. As the nation’s oldest senior meal program, Meals On Wheels is active in all 50 states, and with a strong fund-raising strategy, the not-for-profit is positioned to make a valuable impact.

Every March, Meals On Wheels holds its “March for Meals” campaign to increase awareness, recruit new volunteers, and raise funds. The organization was recently awarded a $5 million grant from the Walmart Foundation. These funds will help with the Rural Initiative, which specifically addresses senior hunger in underserved rural communities. In addition to addressing senior hunger, Meals On Wheels helps with health literacy, food safety, and telephone reassurance for discharged hospital patients.
